PULPIT ROCK - NORWAY

Preikestolen, or Preacher’s or Pulpit Rock in Norway is a 620m cliff perched atop Lysefjorden. The cliff face is astonishingly almost perfectly flat, 25m x 25m square, and looks out over the Kjerag plateau in Western Norway.

If you click on the photo, you can go the virtual Norway portal, and experience a 360 HD panoramic view from the cliff. It might take a second or two to load, but it’s well worth it; I was peering over the edge of the cliff when my phone vibrated, giving me a minor heart attack.

What I find most incredible is that despite it being a popular tourist attraction (in one summer it can expect upto 130’000 visitors), there are no safety barriers; a conscious decision to avoid spoiling the beauty of the natural environment. Given the Norwegian clear disregard for all things health and safety, guess how many people have had an accident there?

None.

A fair number of people have committed suicide there though. But that was always going to happen in a place as beautiful and high as this.
