General Deluxe & Gadgetboy are two ordinary men. One is from Rotherham and lives in Sheffield, and one lives in Manchester but is from London.

Meeting in the Sheffield almost a decade ago, Gadgetboy was then a well-known DJ around the city, known for his technical wizardry and turntablist skills, and General Deluxe used to sneak bottles of rum into the club in Gadget’s record bag.

Our day jobs keep us interested, General Deluxe in education, and Gadgetboy as a creative for an advertising company, but it’s the after-work photo shoots, the impromptu beat making sessions at Gadgetboy’s Studio in Sheffield, or the sharing of new music, iPad apps, Wii hacks that led to talk of creating an outlet for our creations, and creative and technological inspirations.

Over a chicken shawarma and mixed mezze at our regular haunt, Jaffa, on Rusholme’s Curry Mile, The Upside was born. We aim to curate a virtual repository of all things we consider to be of aesthetic, aural or intellectual interest. We may not be cool, but we know cool when we see it.
